Teams Custom Emojis Not Working? Fixes That Actually Help

Teams is the pickiest of the three platforms about custom emojis. The fix is usually one of four things.

1. Your Admin Turned Custom Emojis Off

The most common cause. If the upload option is missing from the emoji picker for everyone, your organization's Teams admin controls it in the Teams admin center under messaging settings. There is no client-side trick around it: send the emoji file to your admin or IT contact and ask them to upload it, or ask them to enable custom emojis for the org.

2. The File Is Too Big or the Wrong Shape

Teams rejects files over its size limit and handles odd aspect ratios badly. Every download on Teamsmoji is already inside the limits, so if you grabbed the emoji here, this is not your problem. If the file came from somewhere else, check it against the size limits guide and shrink it if needed.

3. It Uploaded but Nobody Else Sees It

Custom emojis in Teams are shared across the organization, but changes can take a while to reach everyone. If a teammate cannot see an emoji you just added, have them restart the Teams client first. Signing out and back in forces a fresh sync. Waiting an hour fixes most of the rest.

4. The Mobile App Is the Wrong Place

You cannot upload custom emojis from the Teams mobile app, only from desktop or web. If you have been looking for the button on your phone, that is the whole problem. The mobile guide explains the save-now-upload-later flow, and the desktop steps show where the upload button hides.

Still stuck?

Run through the checks in order: admin setting, file size, client restart, right app. One of them accounts for nearly every broken custom emoji in Teams. If all four pass and it still fails, the file itself may be corrupt; download a fresh copy and try again.
