Custom Emoji Size Limits: Teams vs Slack vs Discord
Every platform has its own limit. Here is the one table you need, and what to do when a file is too big.
The limits
| Platform | Max file size | Pixels | Animated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Teams | about 1 MB | square works best | Yes, GIFs loop |
| Slack | about 128 KB | 128 x 128 recommended | Yes |
| Discord | 256 KB | resized to 128 x 128 | Yes, in animated slots |
All emojis on Teamsmoji are already sized to fit these limits, so if you downloaded it here you can skip the rest of this guide.
Your file is too big. Now what
For a static PNG, resize it down to 128 x 128 with any image editor or a free online resizer. For an animated GIF, shrinking the dimensions is the fastest win; dropping frames or shortening the loop also cuts size fast. A two-second loop at 128 x 128 almost always fits under every limit above.
Why small is better anyway
Emojis render tiny in chat. Fine detail that looks great at 500 pixels turns to mush at 32. Bold shapes, thick outlines, and transparent backgrounds read best at emoji size, which is why the blob-style packs are so popular.
