How to Add Custom Emojis in Discord

Discord does per-server emojis, so you need the right permission on that server first.

Upload a custom emoji

  1. Download the emoji you want from Teamsmoji.
  2. Open your Discord server and click the server name at the top left.
  3. Go to Server Settings, then the Emoji tab.
  4. Click Upload Emoji and pick your downloaded image.
  5. Give it a name at least two characters long. Discord trims it into a :name: you can type anywhere on the server.

Permissions

You need the Manage Emojis permission (or server admin) to upload. If the Emoji tab is missing from your settings, ask someone with admin rights to add the emoji for you or grant the permission.

Limits and slots

Discord caps emoji files at 256 KB and resizes them to 128 x 128 pixels. Every server gets a set of static emoji slots, and boosting the server adds more slots including animated ones. If your server is out of slots, you will need to delete an old emoji or boost.

Why friends see a gray emoji

Custom emojis are tied to their home server. People without Discord Nitro can only use them inside that server; pasting one elsewhere shows a gray placeholder. That is normal Discord behavior, not a broken upload.
