How to Add Custom Emojis in Microsoft Teams

Teams hides the upload button inside the emoji picker. Here is exactly where it is.

Upload a custom emoji

  1. Download the emoji you want from Teamsmoji. It saves as a PNG or GIF.
  2. Open Microsoft Teams and go into any chat or channel.
  3. Click the emoji icon in the message box to open the emoji picker.
  4. Look for the "+" button or a "Manage emojis" option in the picker, and click it.
  5. Upload your downloaded image and give it a short name.
  6. Done. The emoji now shows up in the picker for everyone in your organization.

Use it in a message or a reaction

In a message, open the emoji picker and find your emoji under the custom section, or type a colon followed by its name. For reactions, hover over any message, click the react icon, and your custom emojis are in the same picker.

If the upload button is missing

Your Teams admin controls whether people can add custom emojis. If you do not see the "+" button, the setting is off for your organization. The fix is a polite message to whoever runs Teams at your company: custom emojis are enabled in the Teams admin center under messaging settings.

What works best

Teams accepts images up to about 1 MB and square images look best. Animated GIFs work and loop in chat. Every emoji on Teamsmoji is already sized to fit, so you can skip the resizing step.
