How to Find the Best Custom Emojis for Slack

Search by the Words You Would Type

Start with the reaction's job: done, thanks, working, confused, or incident. Slack exposes custom emoji in its picker, but shortcodes are the fast path once people learn them. A memorable name matters as much as the artwork.

Teamsmoji search ignores spaces, underscores, and dashes. Searching lets go, lets_go, or lets-go reaches the same idea, which helps when you remember the phrase but not the filename.

Preview It at Slack Size

Open the emoji's detail page and switch the preview to Slack. Check both the inline message and reaction chip. Faces, gestures, and high-contrast shapes survive; tiny captions and subtle photo details usually do not. The surrounding UI is an emulation and can vary by Slack version or theme, but the scale check is the useful part.

Name for Recall, Then Add Aliases

Prefer a plain primary name such as :done:, :thank_you:, or :working_on_it:. Slack also supports emoji aliases, which give the same image another code. Add an alias when two teams use different words for the same reaction instead of uploading a duplicate image.

Slack's current custom emoji guide says custom emoji are available across the organization from the Slack section of the picker. Owners can restrict who adds them. If the button is missing, ask an owner or admin rather than repeatedly resizing a valid file.

Use Reactions to Cut Message Noise

Slack describes reactions as a quick alternative to a follow-up message. Agree on a few meanings: eyes for seen, check or finish for done, and working-on-it for ownership. Keep the meaning loose enough to feel natural, but stable enough that a project channel can read status at a glance.

Install a Small Set First

Start with six to twelve reactions. Watch what appears in real threads for two weeks, add aliases for near-miss searches, and remove duplicates nobody uses. A Slack workspace with predictable shortcodes is easier to use than one with hundreds of clever uploads nobody can find.
